What to Wear for Your Family Photos

Family sitting in the grass in their spring outfits that coordinate but do not overly match

Raise your hand if you’ve ever done this when deciding what to wear for family photos:

  • Spent hours scrolling Pinterest for outfit ideas… only to feel more overwhelmed.
  • Bought matching outfits for the family, then realized they look stiff and unnatural.
  • Worried so much about clothes that you forgot to enjoy the moment.

You’re not alone. As a photographer, I’ve seen it all—from perfectly styled ensembles to last-minute outfit meltdowns. And here’s what I’ve learned: The best family photos happen when you feel like yourselves.

So let’s ditch the stress and create a look that’s:
✅ Authentic (no forced matching!)
✅ Flattering (colors + textures that photograph well)
✅ Comfortable (because happy families = great photos)

Step 1: Start with Your “Anchor Piece”

(This is the secret to effortless coordination!)

Instead of trying to match everyone, choose 1-2 standout items (usually Mom’s dress or a patterned shirt) and build the rest of the outfits around them.

Example:

  • Anchor: Mom’s rust-colored wrap dress with subtle cream polka dots.
  • Build from there:
    • Dad: Cream sweater + dark green chinos (picks up the dress’s earthy tones).
    • Kid 1: Navy sweater + tan corduroys (neutral with a texture pop).
    • Kid 2: Cream thermal + olive overalls (casual but cohesive).

Pro Tip: Lay all the outfits on a bed together. If something looks out of place (like a random bright pink shirt in a muted palette), swap it for a better fit.

Step 2: The Magic Formula for Colors

Stick to 3-4 colors max—any more, and the photo looks chaotic.

How to Pick Your Palette:

  1. Choose 1 Dominant Color (e.g., navy, olive, or burgundy).
  2. Add 1-2 Neutrals (cream, tan, gray, or denim).
  3. Include 1 Accent (a softer or richer version of your main color, like mustard with burgundy).

Avoid:

  • Too much white (can wash you out in photos).
  • Neon or super bright colors (they cast weird tones on skin).
  • Exact matching (e.g., all black shirts + jeans = flat and boring).

Seasonal Color Combos That Always Work:

🍂 Fall/Winter:

  • Deep emerald + cream + gold
  • Burgundy + charcoal + blush
  • Olive + tan + mustard

🌷 Spring/Summer:

  • Soft blue + white + lavender
  • Sage + cream + pale pink
  • Denim + coral + tan

Step 3: Texture & Layers = Photo Depth

Flat, solid colors can look dull in photos. Add interest with:

  • Knits (chunky sweaters, cable-knit cardigans).
  • Lace or embroidery (feminine detail for moms/daughters).
  • Corduroy or tweed (great for dads/kids).
  • Lightweight scarves or jackets (for movement).

Example:

  • Mom: Cream lace blouse + rust skirt
  • Dad: Navy textured blazer + white tee + khakis
  • Toddler: Corduroy overalls + striped tee

Step 4: Keep Kids Comfortable (Meltdown Prevention)

The #1 mistake? Dressing kids in stiff, scratchy clothes they’d never wear normally. Especially if you have a kid that already struggles with different sensory experiences, we want to high consider this when deciding what to wear your family photos.

What to Do Instead:

  • For babies: Soft knits, stretchy rompers, or breathable fabrics.
  • For toddlers: Playful but polished (e.g., suspenders only if they’ll keep them on).
  • For older kids: Let them pick between 2-3 pre-approved options (so they feel involved).

Avoid:

  • Scratchy collars, tight waistbands, or complicated buttons.
  • Outfits that restrict movement (if they can’t run, they won’t smile).

Step 5: The Final Checklist (Before Photo Day!)

✅ Do a “test run”—have everyone try on outfits a week early to avoid surprises.
✅ Check for stains, wrinkles, or fit issues (especially kid clothes!).
✅ Pack a backup outfit (for spills, diaper blowouts, or last-minute regrets).
✅ Bring props or accessories (blankets, hats, or a favorite toy for candids).

The Biggest Secret? It’s Not About the Clothes.

Your family’s connection is what makes the photos special—not whether everyone’s outfits are Pinterest-perfect.

The best photos happen when:

  • You’re laughing at Dad’s terrible joke.
  • Your toddler is twirling in their dress instead of standing stiffly.
  • You forget the camera is there and just be together.
