Why Moon Child PNW Beats Big-Box Stores

1. Try Before You Buy (No Returns Necessary)

Unlike online shopping or big-box stores, Moonchild offers a tactile shopping experience that’s crucial for new parents:

Hands-on testing of carriers: That $150 Ergobaby might not fit your frame, but the $45 ring sling could be perfect. Heather has a variety of carriers available and is happy to chat about your needs.

Fabric quality assurance: No guessing if that organic bamboo onesie is actually soft enough for newborn skin. You can inspect stitching, check for wear, and feel the material.

Real-parent feedback:

“Moon Child has helped us so much. When we found out we were having twins they helped me find preemie clothes and supported me through community. It’s always nice to have another mom to talk to. Heather helped me track down items that we need and help us stay in budget. We also love the events and giveaways they do to keep everyone excited and involved. What a fun space!” — Tabitha

Personally, I’d rather spend a bit more upfront to buy clothes for my kids that will last. Not just for my kids, but these clothes come through our store multiple times and get passed on to multiple families. Keeping more clothes out of the landfill and saving money while doing it.” — Heather

  • What to bring:
    • Gently used clothing (no stains, minimal wear)
    • Clean gear with all safety features intact
    • High-demand brands get highest value

I’ve brought in so many of my son’s baby clothes that he’s outgrown and been able to use the store credit from it to replenish his wardrobe, and anything they won’t take you can choose to have them donate and give back to the community which is great! Plus I always love supporting a small, woman-owned business.” — Amanda

Real Parent Testimonials

I first started going to Moon Child when my good friend was pregnant with her first child about three years ago. She told me there was a small, woman-owned children’s clothing store in Olympia that I had to know if I was going to have a baby one day. My husband and I had been trying for a few years at this point with no luck. Walking into Moon Child was, and still is truly magical.

You can always find something you didn’t know you were looking for at an amazing price. I met Heather that day, and while perusing the clothes, it was like she knew exactly what I didn’t know I was looking for. She pointed out a Winnie the Pooh onesie on the racks that was too cute to not have been bought yet. Winnie the Pooh was our dream nursery theme. I just remember thinking, “If we ever end up being able to have a baby, I wanna make sure we really support this shop.

I went back several times with friends until finally, about a year and a few months later, I was pregnant with our daughter. My husband and I attended our first bag sale together at Moon Child while I was six months pregnant. I got some of her nursery staples and tons of her toys. I’d guess that about 70% of her wardrobe is from Moon Child, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Moon Child is more than a store for us. It has become a major part of the community that we surround ourselves with here in Olympia. Heather and her team have slowly watched my daughter grow into a tiny toddler.

They’ve given me tips and tricks when I was in the throes of postpartum and made me feel less alone during a time that can occasionally feel very isolating. I’m really thankful for that small shop on 5th Ave. I’ve definitely never felt so welcomed when entering a shop, more excited about shopping in general than I am when I know I’m going to Moon Child.” — Tamara

Final Thoughts: Less Stuff, More Peace

Pregnancy bola necklace hanging with a white background, perfect gift for someone preparing for a newborn.
I asked Heather about some of her most memorable items, and one of them is still hanging on the wall ready to be taken home. This is a pregnancy bola or harmony necklace, originating from Indonesia, “a pregnancy bola is a long necklace that is worn up to the belly, close to the baby. This little gem has a little peculiarity. It is made of a small ball which contains small bells inside. With each movement of the mother, the jewel will emit a lovely sound, soft and harmonious, for baby.”

Preparing for a newborn doesn’t have to mean drowning in gadgets that some influencer convinced you that you needed and you’ll use twice. You can have a personalized shopping experience at Moon Child and most likely gain a friend in the process.
