W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory: Location Guide

Outside of the WW Seymour Botanical Conservatory, a large glass building in Tacoma WA.

Want your maternity photos to feel like you’re stepping into a living watercolor painting? Then we need to do your photos at the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory. The iconic Victorian-style glasshouse, tucked inside Wright Park, transforms every maternity session into something extraordinary. When April showers roll in? The raindrops streak those historic glass walls, turning the whole W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory into a glittering snow globe of diffused light and tropical textures.

I’ve included photos from Netania and John’s maternity session, a classic “April showers” type day for the PNW. But the warm, humid air meant Netania could wear that dreamy white maxi dress without shivering, while surrounded by color and spring blooms. We also did some outside with a big clear umbrella, almost echoing the glass from the conservatory.

Your Stress-Free Guide to the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory

🌿 Permits Made Simple

  • Cost:
    • Wednesday-Friday: $30 per half hour or $50 per hour
    • Saturday-Sunday: $40 dollars per half hour or $70 per hour
      • You can also rent the whole conservatory for $275 if you’re interested in hosting an event there (dreamy baby shower, anybody?)
  • Pro Tip: Permits can only be obtained during certain days/times, check out more info here.

When I got a permit, I was able to get one same day at the counter. But it’s never a bad idea to call ahead of time to see if it will be busy.

☔️ Rain Plan Perfection

While the Conservatory shines in showers, I always scout:

  • Wright Park just outside the conservatory (2-min walk from the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory)
  • Dune Peninsula (15-min drive if you crave waterfront drama)

Lighting Secrets:

Avoid This: Noon under the central dome = harsh shadows. Instead, sneak into the fern alcove near the pitcher plants, it’s like nature’s own softbox.

Golden Hour Hack: Around 3 PM, the southeast glass walls turn into this glowing backdrop. Perfect for those backlit, “I am a radiant goddess” bump shots.

Why Clients Lose Their Minds Over This Place

It’s so special to be growing a whole new person and be surrounded by gorgeous living, growing, foliage. That’s the thing about the W.W. Seymour Conservatory…it doesn’t just look pretty. It feels alive. The air’s warm, the colors are stupidly vibrant, and there’s something about all that glass and greenery that makes people relax in a way they never do in a studio.

And hey, if you’re the type who thinks, But isn’t it just a fancy greenhouse? Just go stand in there for five minutes. Tell me you don’t immediately want to whisper, take your shoes off, or confess your deepest secrets to a philodendron. It’s that kind of place.

If you’re on the fence about where to shoot, just…trust me! The conservatory’s got your back. (And your lighting. And your vibe.)

FAQ: Your Conservatory Maternity Session Questions Answered

1. “What if my toddler won’t cooperate?”

Totally normal! The Conservatory’s winding paths and koi pond naturally hold little ones’ attention. I always build in 15-20 minutes of “exploration time” for kids to touch leaves and watch fish. Pro tip: Bring their favorite snack, goldfish crackers can make a world of difference. Plus it’s inside Wright park, so if you have a little one that needs a break–we can step right outside!

2. “Can we bring props or sentimental items?”

Absolutely! The space pairs beautifully with:

  • Vintage books or a family quilt for cozy seating shots
  • A tiny pair of baby shoes to highlight your bump
  • Ultrasound photos tucked among the ferns.
Just avoid glitter or confetti! We want to leave the space exactly how we found it.

3. “How far in advance should we book?”

  • Peak months (April-June, Sept-Oct): 3-4 months out
  • Winter magic (Nov-Feb): 1-2 months (but don’t wait – holiday dates fill fast!)
Bonus: I send all clients information with parking maps + restroom locations after booking.

4. “Are there restrooms?”

Yes! The Conservatory has a clean restroom on site near the gift shop.

5. “What’s your reschedule policy for bad weather?”

Rain = magic here! But if it’s:

  • Lightning/freezing temps: We reschedule at no cost
  • Wildfire smoke/extreme wind: I’ll suggest other backup locations or reschedule.
  • Just PNW drizzle? We grab my stash of clear umbrellas and make art!

6. “Do you help with posing? I feel awkward in photos.”

Mama, I’ve got you. We’ll:

  1. Start with easy “walking and talking” shots to warm up
  2. Use the environment (lean on a palm trunk, trace your bump near a blooming vine)
  3. Capture real moments between poses (like when you laugh because the baby kicks)

“My husband and I had an amazing experience with Philomena during a maternity photo session! She was so kind, easy to work with, accommodating, timely, she helped us pose to get flattering shots, and it was very apparent that she loves what she does. She helped us pick out a location and made the most of a rainy day, and the resulting images were stunning.
Can’t wait to see how she captures our sweet baby girl in our next photo shoot!”

One Last Thing

Let me leave you with this: when I was pregnant I truly felt too huge to want any photos of myself. I’d gained almost 100lbs (no joke) and did not feel like I wanted to remember that version of myself. I trusted my photographer and doula and we got some photos at Wright Park. When I look back on those photos now, I’m so incredibly happy that I trusted someone else to capture me the way they saw me. Growing a beautiful baby boy, excited and nervous to be a new mom, and totally ready to not be pregnant anymore.

That’s why I do this. Not for perfect poses. So that you can remember this phase in your life fondly, even if it’s uncomfortable. I promise, you won’t regret it.

Want to capture that pregnancy glow? Let’s make some magic at the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory. Contact me here!

Much love,
